Black Oak Arkansas

Black Oak Arkansas is one of the legendary names of Southern rock; a band whose raw energy, hard-driving sound, and outrageous stage presence helped define an era and influence generations of rock performers who followed.

Named for the band’s hometown of Black Oak, Arkansas, the group rose to national prominence in the 1970s, charting ten albums and packing concert venues across North America and Europe. Their unmistakable sound fused hard rock, blues-driven boogie, and Southern roots, powered by multiple guitars, heavy riffs, and a live performance style that was anything but restrained.

At the center of it all was Jim “Dandy” Mangrum, whose unmistakable raspy vocals, flamboyant appearance, wild physical performances, and signature washboard made him one of the most recognizable frontmen of the decade. Long before the larger-than-life rock singers of the 1980s became a fixture on arena stages and MTV, Jim Dandy was creating the blueprint.
